Worked example

A 64.50 bill, 18% tip, 2 people

  1. Tip: 64.50 × 0.18 = 11.61
  2. Total: 64.50 + 11.61 = 76.11
  3. Each: 76.11 ÷ 2 = 38.055 → 38.06

Each person pays about 38.06.

Quick mental tips

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left (64.50 → 6.45).
  • 20%: double the 10% figure (12.90).
  • 15%: 10% plus half of it (6.45 + 3.23 = 9.68).

Customs differ

Tipping expectations vary widely. In the US, 15–20% at sit-down restaurants is common; in much of Europe a service charge is often included or a small round-up is usual; in Japan, tipping is generally not expected. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
