Sales tax / VAT
Formulas
adding: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
tax included = gross − net
Worked examples
Add 21% VAT to 100
- 100 × 1.21 = 121
Gross price 121; tax 21.
Remove 21% VAT from 121
- 121 ÷ 1.21 = 100
- Tax included: 121 − 100 = 21
Net price 100.
The common mistake
Taking 21% off 121 gives 95.59, not 100. Tax is a percentage of the pre-tax price, so to remove it you divide by 1.21 rather than subtracting 21%.
