Patterns that help

  • The table is symmetric: 7 × 8 is the same as 8 × 7, so there are only 78 different facts to learn, not 144.
  • × 2 is doubling; × 4 is doubling twice; × 8 is doubling three times.
  • × 5 answers end in 0 or 5 and are half of × 10.
  • × 9: the digits add up to 9 (9 × 7 = 63, 6 + 3 = 9), and the tens digit is one less than the multiplier.
  • × 11 up to 9: repeat the digit (11 × 7 = 77). 11 × 12 = 132.
  • Square numbers lie on the diagonal: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25…

The hard ones

Most people find 6 × 7 = 42, 6 × 8 = 48, 7 × 8 = 56 and 8 × 9 = 72 the hardest. A quick check: 5, 6, 7, 8 → 56 = 7 × 8.
