Worked example

Convert 2,500 megabytes to gigabytes

  1. Divide by 1,000
  2. 2,500 ÷ 1,000 = 2.5

2,500 MB = 2.5 GB

Good to know

Some software, including Windows, calculates with binary units — 1,024 MiB per GiB — but labels them “MB” and “GB”. If your file manager uses binary units, divide by 1,024 instead: 2,500 “MB” shown by Windows is 2.44 of its “GB”. The data storage converter includes both systems.
