Working

  1. A: 3.49 ÷ 500 = 0.007
  2. B: 5.99 ÷ 1,000 = 0.006

Use the same unit (grams, ounces, items…) for both quantities.

Formula

unit price = price ÷ quantity

Worked example

500 g for 3.49 vs 1 kg for 5.99

  1. Write both quantities in grams: 500 and 1,000
  2. A: 3.49 ÷ 500 = 0.00698 per gram
  3. B: 5.99 ÷ 1000 = 0.00599 per gram

Option B is about 14.2% cheaper per gram.

Tips for fair comparisons

  • Convert to the same unit first (use the weight or volume converters).
  • Multiply by 100 or 1,000 to get a friendlier number, such as the price per 100 g.
  • The cheaper unit price only saves money if you will actually use the larger quantity before it spoils.
