Working

  1. Monday: 09:00–17:30 = 8:30 − 30 min break = 8:00
  2. Tuesday: 09:00–17:30 = 8:30 − 30 min break = 8:00
  3. Wednesday: 09:00–17:30 = 8:30 − 30 min break = 8:00
  4. Thursday: 09:00–17:30 = 8:30 − 30 min break = 8:00
  5. Friday: 09:00–17:30 = 8:30 − 30 min break = 8:00

How the hours are counted

  1. For each day: end time − start time.
  2. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight (22:00 to 06:00 = 8 h).
  3. Subtract the unpaid break.
  4. Add the days together and convert to decimal hours by dividing the minutes by 60.

Worked example

Monday 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break

  1. 17:30 − 09:00 = 8 h 30 min
  2. 8 h 30 min − 30 min = 8 h 00 min
  3. Five such days: 5 × 8 h = 40 h

40:00 hours, or 40.00 decimal hours.

Payroll systems often want decimal hours. 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. Your employer may round punch times (for example to the nearest 6 or 15 minutes); this calculator uses the exact times you enter.
