How the months are counted

The calculator steps forward from the earlier date by whole years, then whole months, then counts the leftover days. When the start day does not exist in a later month (31 January + 1 month), the date is clamped to that month’s last day, which is the most common convention.

Worked example

12 April 2021 to 27 September 2026

  1. Whole years: 12 Apr 2021 → 12 Apr 2026 = 5 years
  2. Whole months: 12 Apr → 12 Sep = 5 months
  3. Days: 12 Sep → 27 Sep = 15 days

5 years, 5 months, 15 days.

Why “months” can be ambiguous

Months have 28 to 31 days, so “1 month” is not a fixed length. From 31 January to 28 February is a full month by the clamping rule, but only 28 days. When exactness matters (interest, contracts, notice periods), check which convention applies and use total days if in doubt.
