Convert a time
The rules
- From 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM, the hour is the same (add a leading zero if needed): 9:05 AM → 09:05.
- For 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour: 7:30 PM → 19:30.
- Midnight hour: 12:xx AM → 00:xx.
- Noon hour: 12:xx PM stays 12:xx.
Worked example
Convert 7:30 PM
- It is PM and not 12, so add 12 to the hour
- 7 + 12 = 19
19:30.

Midnight confusion
“12:00 AM” means midnight at the start of a day and “12:00 PM” means noon, but many people find these ambiguous. Timetables and contracts often write “00:00” or “12:00 midnight” and “12:00 noon”, and some avoid the issue by using 23:59 or 00:01.
