Mode Calculator
The mode is the value that appears most often. A data set can have one mode, several, or none at all.
Mode of a list
How it works
Count how many times each distinct value occurs. The value (or values) with the highest count is the mode. If every value occurs equally often — for example 1, 2, 3, 4 — there is no mode, because no value stands out.
Worked example
Mode of 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 7, 3, 5
- Count each value: 3 appears twice, 7 three times, the others once
- The highest count is 3, belonging to 7
The mode is 7.
When the mode is useful
- It is the only average that works for categories (the most common shoe size sold, the most popular answer).
- It shows peaks: data with two modes (bimodal) often mixes two different groups.
- It is always one of the actual values, unlike the mean.
