How GPA is calculated
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points. Multiply by the course’s credits, add everything up and divide by the total credits.

Worked example
Four courses
- English A (3 credits): 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- Algebra B+ (4): 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- Biology A− (4): 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
- History B (3): 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
- Total: 49.0 points ÷ 14 credits
GPA = 3.50
Cumulative GPA
To combine semesters, add a row per semester using its GPA’s closest letter, or better: enter every course again. Pass/fail courses usually carry no grade points and are left out. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+ or add weight for honors classes — check your school’s policy.
